Description

View of Fort Collins, Larimer County, C.O., 1865 / drawn & published by M. D. Houghton.

This bird’s-eye view print of Fort Collins, Colorado was drawn and published by Merritt D. Houghton around 1865. Fort Collins was founded as a haven for travelers along the Overland Trail that was used for a short period of time during the 1860s to insure safe travel.

The fort had no walls, but remained an important camping location for travelers heading west. When the U. S. Army decommissioned the outpost in 1867, Fort Collins began attracting settlers with agricultural interests.

The illustration shows signal yard, buildings and roads.
