An historic map print reproduction of New Britain, CT, published by J. Knauber and Co. from a lithograph by C. H. Vogt in 1875. The area of New Britain was settled in 1687 and officially became a chartered city in 1871, just four years before the making of this map.
New Britain was to become known as "The Hardware Capital of the World", or "Hardware City", by the early 1900's. Frederick Trent Stanley founded Stanley's Bolt Manufactory in New Britain in 1843, making door bolts and wrought iron hardware. His cousin, Henry Stanley, established The Stanley Rule and Level Company in 1857. Prized by woodworkers still today, the Stanley/Bailey Planes he manufactured, using the planes invented by Leonard Bailey, remain popular among woodworkers today. Stanley Works is one of the referenced places listed on the map. The two companies merged in 1920, becoming the Hand Tools Division of Stanley Works.
