A view of Savannah as it stood the 29th of March 1734.
Historic map of Savannah, Georgia, from an engraving by Pierre Fourdrinier, originally published by Peter Gordon in 1734. This reproduction print is from the later publishing in 1876.
The title of the map reads: "A View of Savanah as it Stood the 29th of March 1734". The publisher's statement in the lower margin reads as follows:
"To the Hon. the Trustees for establishing the Colony of Georgia in America.
This view of the Town of Savanah is humbly dedicated by their Honours.
Obliged and most Obedient Servant.
Peter Gordon.

The map provides a view of the newly established city just one year after the General James Oglethorpe landed with 120 passengers on a high bluff above the Savannah River. Oglethorpe's tent is indexed and located on the map. The map clearly illustrates the 24 original squares that were laid out by Oglethorpe, making Savannah America's first planned city.
Upon the arrival of Oglethorpe's ship the "Anne", the Yamacraw tribal chief, Tomochichi, greeted the party. Indian traders John and Mary Musgrove were also there to translate. The meeting was friendly and cooperative, with the Yamacraw tribe receiving the newcomers peacefully.
