Description

View of Chicago, Cook County, I.L., 1857 / drawn & published by James T. Palmatary.

This aero-view print of Chicago, Illinois was drawn by J. T. Palmatary and published by Chicago, Braunhold & Sonne in 1857. Chicago emerged near the banks of Lake Michigan from land that had belonged to the Potawatomi Indians in the 1830's.

Chicago's transportation importance began in the 1840's with the building of the Illinois and Michigan Canal which connected the Mississippi River with Lake Michigan. The Galena & Chicago Union Railway also enabled enhanced shipping of the many agricultural products of the region.

Refrigerated railroad cars were the talk of the town in 1857 as dressed beef began to be transported from the stock yards. It would be another ten years before a successful refrigeration car was developed.

The map from the 1850's includes streets, buildings, railroad routes and shipping traffic.

This is a museum quality antique map reproduction print available in multiple sizes as either a paper print or Giclee photo paper print. Giclee prints are also available with dry-mounting to a 1" deep plaque mount style frame with 1/8" beveled edge

(Choose from 30 frame edge color choices).

All reproduction prints are printed as "museum quality", using advanced ink formulas and durable museum quality paper. The reproduction prints reflect the state of repair of the original conserved document. Stains and imperfections reflected in the original map at the time it was collected for conservation are left un-retouched, as they reflect the character and charm of the vintage original. Some major imperfections, such as dark fold lines have been removed when possible. Maps are printed as ordered and are not returnable unless received damaged.

Each map is produced as a detailed museum quality archive print. This special printing process is known as Giclee (zhee-CLAY) and is commonly used to produce very high quality fine art prints. The result is an exquisitely detailed print of substantially higher quality than a standard map poster.

Giclee Print Features:

  • Printed on 10 mil premium luster photo paper resulting in a brilliant, colorful image with a vivid life-like quality.
  • Pigment based Canon LUCIA inks provide smooth tones and rich colors in fine, precise detail.
  • Inks have a lightfastness rating of over 100 years, guaranteeing minimal noticeable fading over a very long period of time.
  • Printed using very high resolution source files.
  • Giclee printing is superior to traditional lithography in a number of ways: colors are brighter, lasts longer, and is a higher resolution.

Museum quality beveled edge plaque mounting is available for our historic map giclee prints.
