Reproduction map of the community known as Holden, MO, drawn by Prussian born Albert Ruger. Ruger emigrated to America where he first worked as a mason. He served with the Ohio Volunteers during the Civil War, where he began to draw views of Union camps. Following the war, Ruger began his panoramic mapping career in Battle Creek, Michigan. and sketched communities in twenty-two states.

Holden is a small city that even today is just 2.4 square miles. Holden lies to the east of Tornado Alley, and is located where the warm moist air from the gulf meets the cold dry air with the Jet Stream. It is 34 miles southeast of Independence, MO.

The map features clearly labeled street names with lively scenes of carriage and pedestrian traffic.
