Description

Maps showing the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad and leased lines.

The Atlantic & Pacific Railroad was a planned railroad line that was to connect Springfield, Missouri and Van Buren, Arkansas with California. The idea was established in 1866 by the U.S. Congress to connect two successful routes, one from St. Louis to Tulsa and one from Albuquerque to Southern California, making one long trans-continental railroad line. Economics held up most new constuction and the concept was eventually abandoned. Parts of the existing lines ended up becoming portions of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe and St. Louis-San Francisco railways.

This special dual map, published in 1873 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co., shows the main line and land grant in Missouri and includes iron and lead regions; general map covers United States showing railroad network with the main lines of the day distinguished by color.
