Description

Panoramic view of the wholesale and office district of St. Louis.

Reproduction panorama vignette of the city known as St. Louis, MO, drawn by Chas. Juehne in 1904, showing the Wholesale and Office Districts. Washington Avenue was beginning to take shape as a major wholesale district. Automobiles began to appear on the streets of town and streetcars were in wide use throughout St. Louis' neighborhoods. St. Louis was becoming the world's largest producer of products such as beer, shoes, wagons and stoves. At the western edge of town the Jefferson Hotel opened, becoming the city's largest. The World's Fair of 1904 attracted 20,000,000 visitors to St. Louis. The Fair combined with the Olympic Games brought worldwide attention to St. Louis and spurred a new era of construction that included hotels, office buildings and homes.

The panorama image features lively scenes of pedestrian, carriage, automobile and streetcar traffic.
