Description

Railroad Commissioner's Map of Mississippi.

This map displaying Mississippi was published in 1888 by Rand, McNally & Co.

Agriculture was of major importance in Mississippi in the late 1800's. In 1888 the Mississippi Agricultural Experiment Station opened at the Agricultural and Mechanical College at Starkville. Its main goal was to educate farmers on the latest modern methods of farming, including pest control, new fertilizers and the use of modern farming equipment.

Mississippi established its controversial "Jim Crow" laws in 1888, allowing segregation at public facilities.

The Illinois Central Railroad began expanding its lines into Mississippi in the 1880's, connecting the state with New Orleans, Louisiana and Louisville, Kentucky.

This map shows a color coded railroad network connecting the state's clearly labeled cities, towns and counties.
