Description

Aero-view of Absecon, New Jersey 1924.

This reproduction aero-view map of Absecon, New Jersey was published by Hughes & Cinquin in 1924. Absecon is a city in Atlantic County just inland from the popular Absecon Light. The coastal lighthouse near Atlantic City is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey. Construction of the masonry lighthouse began in 1854 and was completed in 1857. Designed by George Meade, the navigational aid contained a fixed Fresnel lens.

Railways maintained stops in Absecon on their way to the new Atlantic City. The town was incorporated in the 1870's from parts of Egg Harbor and Galloway Townships. Absecon was reincorporated as a city in 1902. The proposed Absecon Gardens golf course portrayed here in 1924 is today the prestigious Bay Golf Course.

This panoramic map from 1924 shows Absecon's buildings, railroad routes, clearly labeled streets and outlying communities. It features inset illustrations of the following:

Absecon Gardens, Proposed 18 Hole Golf Course
The Oaks
Public School
The First National Bank
W. B. Etris & Co., Coal and Feed
