Description

Elizabeth, N.J. 1898.

This reproduction panoramic view of Elizabeth, New Jersey was published by Landis & Hughes in 1898. Elizabeth is a city in Union County that was established in 1855 and named in honor of the wife of early New Jersey proprietor Sir George Carteret, Elizabeth.

The town prospered with industries such as the Singer Sewing Machine Company which was founded in 1873 and employed nearly 2,000 workers. In 1895, former Navy Lt. Lewis Nixon began the Crescent Shipyard in Elizabeth. The company would become a major ship and submarine builder for the U. S. Navy.

This bird's-eye view map from 1898 shows the Elizabeth River, streets, bridges and buildings. In the lower left there is a photograph of the residence of Dr. G. W. Bailey 1165 E. Jersey St.
