This reproduction panoramic view map of Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey was drawn by T. M. Fowler and published by Fowler & Bulger in 1876. Morristown, settled in the early 1700's, held an important role during the American Revolutionary War and has since been called "the military capital of the American Revolution". The township and county were named after Lewis Morris, a popular former governor of New York who became governor of New Jersey Province when New Jersey separated from New York 1738. He served as governor of New Jersey Province until his death in 1746.
The Continental Army under the command of General George Washington designated Morristown to be a good choice as a headquarters, near enough to New England and between Philadelphia and New York with ample arms and provisions for troops. They headquartered in Morristown at Jacob Arnold's Tavern from January to May of 1777 and again from December 1779 to June of 1780 at Jockey Hollow. Later that year the commanders and their wives including Martha Washington held their winter headquarters at the Ford Mansion at the edge of town.
The innovative Morris Canal was completed in the late 1820's to transport anthracite coal from Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley to the furnaces of New Jersey's growing iron industry. The canal system involved several inclining ponds to ease the drop of elevation allowing boats to ascend smoothly. Portions of the system were dismantled later to allow for the coming railroads. Samuel F. B. Morse and Alfred Vail built and first demonstrated their telegraph in Morristown in 1838.
