Reproduction bird's-eye
view map of Friendship, New York, drawn by H. Brosius and published by
Beck & Pauli in 1882. Friendship is a village in Allegany County located
next to Van Campen Creek, first settled in 1806. Once known as "Bloody
Corners" or "Fighting Corners" due to excessive local feuding, in 1815
the town of Friendship was formed and given the name of Friendship to
signify the peace that had finally been reached among the locals. The
area had been a logging community, but once the trees were harvested,
the saw mills disappeared, with agriculture and dairy farming becoming
the most prominent enterprises, specializing in cheese and butter.
The population in Friendship increased from 1,889 in 1806 to only
2,216 in 1890, so it is notable that eighty-one men from the town of
Friendship fought in the Civil War.
The map from 1882 features
clearly labeled street names, buildings and includes railroad traffic.
