Description

Oneonta, N.Y. / drawn by L.R. Burleigh ; published & drawn by L.R. Burleigh.

This reproduction panorama map of Oneonta, New York was drawn by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1884. Oneonta lies along the banks of the Susquehanna River in Otsego County. It is in the north foothills of the Catskill Mountains and is nicknamed "City of the Hills". Oneonta was known as a rowdy lumber mill town until the opening of the Charlotte Turnpike in 1843. This new transportation route shifted the town's business neighborhood away from the mills and toward new commercial opportunities. At the time of this map's publishing Oneonta was enjoying the commerce related to the railroad industry. Large railroad shops and a round house were built. The Susquehanna Railroad roundhouse with its long turntable was considered one of the world's most immense. About 70 passenger trains rolled through Oneonta each day on the two steam railways and electric line.

This panoramic view map of Oneonta from 1884 shows labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes.
