Description

Map of the State of New York showing its Water and Rail Road lines.

The additions to railroad transportation in New York State during the mid-1800's, led to expanded settlement of remote areas of western New York. A number of lines were added during the mid-1800's to reach the western regions of the state accessing connections into Pennsylvania and Canada.

Several railroad lines were built to transport anthracite coal from the mines in Pennsylvania and New York to the industrial areas within the state and elsewhere during that time period.

This map was published in 1855 by David Vaughan, under the direction of John T. Clark, state engineer and surveyor. It shows drainage, relief, counties, cities and towns. Color coded railroads are indicated as either operational, under construction, or proposed.
