Description

Map of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad and its principal connections.

New York State’s advancements in transportation have been significant beginning in the early 1800's.

Numerous railroads were added in New York State during the mid-1800's. These new lines cut the costs of transporting goods dramatically. Farmers and manufacturers were now able to transport goods more efficiently, and at less cost. Railroads also opened up the beautiful scenery of western and upper New York to vacationers.

There was much competition among the railroad companies during this time period.

Cornelius Vanderbilt consolidated the New York Central and the Hudson River Railroad in 1869, making the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad.

That same year, construction began on the Grand Central Terminal on the corner of 42nd Street and 4th Avenue in Manhattan, New York.

This colorful map of the eastern half of the United States was published in 1876 by Rand, McNally & Co. It displays relief, major waterways, cities and towns. Railroad lines are clearly indicated with heavier lines portraying the main routes.

Illustrated hand states:

"The only 4 track railroad in the world all laid with steel rails."

Inset map shows the railroad's western connection.
