New York State’s advancements in transportation were significant in the 1800's.
The Long Island Railroad was established in 1834 to provide daily commuter service between Boston and New York. In 1849 the line began concentrating on Long Island community services. At that time other routes built from New York through Connecticut over to Boston nearly made the Long Island Railroad obsolete.
In 1874 the Long Island Railroad merged with a number of smaller Long Island lines to become a more efficient commuter network. The railroad became a lifeline to new and old communities of Long Island, providing transportation and services.
The Brooklyn Bridge was set to open in the year after this map's publishing. Much speculation and additional settlement of inner portions of Long Island was occurring during that time.
