Railroad Map of the State of New York to accompany the twelfth annual report of the Board of Railroad Commissioners of the State of New York, 1894.
New York State’s advancements in transportation have been significant beginning in the early 1800's with the addition of the first steamboat line.
Buffalo, located on the eastern shores of Lake Erie near the head of the Niagara River, was a small trading community before the Erie Canal opened with Buffalo at its western terminus. The Erie Canal opened in 1825. The canal enabled Buffalo to prosper and grow into a major port city and manufacturing center.
Railroads closely followed the routes of canals. Numerous railroads were added in New York State during the mid-1800's. These new lines cut the costs of transporting goods dramatically. Farmers and manufacturers were now able to transport goods more efficiently, and at less cost.
Railroads also opened up the beautiful scenery of western New York to vacationers during this period. A number of railroad lines were added during the mid-1800's to reach the western and upper regions of the state and Canada.
The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883, linking Brooklyn with Manhattan.
The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886. Frédéric Bartholdi designed the statue representing "Libertas", the Roman goddess of freedom. The statue was constructed in France and shipped overseas in parts that were assembled on a pedestal on New York Harbor’s Bedloe’s Island. The island is now called Liberty Island and the neoclassical sculpted “Mother of Exiles” remains a symbol of American freedom.
In 1892 Ellis Island took over, from New York’s Fort Clinton,as the most active point of entry for millions of immigrants into the United States.
This map was published in 1894 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It features cities, towns, counties, and waterways. Railroads are clearly labeled with mileage noted between stations.
Inset maps at the lower left include a miniature railroad map of the vicinity of New York, and the western portion of Long Island.
