Description

Bird's eye view of the city of Utica, Oneida County, New York 1873. Drawn by H. Brosius.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Utica, New York was drawn by H. Brosius in 1873. Utica, county seat for Oneida County lies in New York's Mohawk Valley. Situated mid-way along the Erie Canal from Rome to Salina, Utica is also terminus for the Chenango Canal that runs from Binghamton. These waterways, along with the Mohawk River led Utica to its great transportation importance in the 1800s. The Utica Free Academy was founded here in 1814. The town was a logical stopover for travelers between Rome and Salina. In 1873, Bagg's Hotel was already a longstanding establishment near the river where Genesee Street meets John Street at the place that was called Bagg Square. It was founded as a tavern in 1794 by Moses Bagg and boasts a guest list that included General George Washington, Aaron Burr, Henry Clay, General Lafayette, Joseph Bonaparte, Thomas Moore and Washington Irving among others. In 1870 Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) spoke to a sold-out house in Utica and later declared that he "brought down the house like an avalanche".

This panoramic map from 1873 features an inset illustration of New York Lunatic Asylum. It shows buildings, railroad routes, labeled streets and canals.
