Description

Waverly, N.Y. 1881. Thomas Hunter Lith.

This multiple view map of Waverly, New York was drawn by John Moray and published by Thomas Hunter Lithographers in 1881. Waverly is located along the Chemung River in Tioga County. The village was incorporated in 1854. The original community were of the understanding that their village was located in Pennsylvania, but later, upon being resurveyed, the village was determined to be within New York State's boundaries. The town was named after Sir Walter Scott's novel "Waverley" by the community's beloved fireman Joseph E. Hallett. Hallett, affectionately known as "Uncle Joe", formed Waverly's first fire department in 1855.

With the village government's assistance, Joseph E. Hallett was able to appropriate $900 for a hand operated engine and Neptune Engine Co. No. 1 was founded. The fire brigade maintained 68 members and was known as "Old Neptune". The fire engine took 40 men to operate and its tanks often went dry. In 1875, a new Silsby Steam Engine and hose cart with 300 feet of rubber hose worth $5000 was brought in and the Tioga Hose No. 1 was founded. In 1876, another fire company was formed as "Hook and Ladder Co. No. 2". This company not only fought fires, but added culture to the community, organizing a drama club and putting on plays such as their popular version of "Uncle Tom's Cabin".

This panoramic view from 1881 shows scenes of daily life in Waverly. The beautifully colored map views the village from the north. It features illustrations that include the following local views:
