Camp Chase was set up in 1861 and named after Salmon P. Chase. It was established as a training camp for Ohio volunteer army soldiers. It was also used as a prisoner-of-war camp, a parole camp and a post for soldiers to muster out. From 1861 to 1865, an estimated 150,000 Union soldiers and 25,000 Confederate prisoners passed through Camp Chase. Confederates captured during Morgan's Raid were held here. When Camp Chase was closed in 1865, there were still 9,400 men incarcerated there. Hospital patients were transferred and two years later the buildings were dismantled.
