Description

Map of the Marietta and Pittsburgh Railroad and its connections.

Cleveland was founded in the late 1700's on the shores of Lake Erie, near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River. With the addition of several canals in the early 1800's, Cleveland quickly became an important manufacturing and transportation site.

Coal mining was quite important for the economy of Ohio beginning in the early 1800's. The coal regions were mostly in the southern and eastern parts of the state. Coal began to be transported from the coal mines to Cleveland in 1828. There the coal was sold for use by the many steamship companies that traveled through the Great Lakes region. The coal was found to be a more efficient power source for the steamers.

Cleveland was incorporated as a city in 1836. It was then conveniently connected with the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Erie Canal and the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the Gulf of Mexico, along the Mississippi River. The city was an important transport point for Minnesota iron ore and other raw materials being moved across the Great Lakes.

As railroad systems and industries emerged throughout that part of the country, the demand for coal increased drastically. Ohio coal mine production reached five million tons by the early 1870's. Demand doubled that output by 1890.

The Marietta & Pittsburg Railroad was built in 1868 to serve the valued Ohio coal regions. The line became the Marietta, Pittsburgh & Cleveland Railroad in 1873. Later in 1879 it became the Cleveland & Marietta Railway. Eventually in 1926, the line became part of the Pennsylvania, Ohio & Detroit Railroad system.

This detailed map of Ohio and vicinity was published in 1871 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. Shown are portions of Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The map displays cities, towns, counties, waterways, and mineral deposits. Railroads are clearly labeled with mileage between stations posted.
