Description

Railroad Map showing the lands of the Standard Coal and Iron Co. situated in the Hocking Valley, Ohio, and their relationto the markets of the north and west.

Iron production in northeastern Ohio was of great economic concern in the late 1800's. Charcoal furnaces that had produced pig-iron since early in the century were being replaced by coal burning furnaces which could produce cleaner and higher quality iron.

Several important businesses emerged in Ohio during that time including the Standard Oil Company. John D. Rockefeller’s 1863 investment in a Cleveland oil refinery proved to be successful enough for him to eventually gain control of nearly ninety percent of all oil refineries and pipelines in the United States, using what critics called “unethical practices”.

This detailed map of the north-central and Great Lakes region was published in 1881 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It shows cities, towns, counties, waterways, coal fields, and clearly labeled railroad system. Included are portions of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and all of Ohio.
