Cleveland was founded in the late 1700's along the shores of Lake Erie, near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River. Cleveland quickly became an important manufacturing town with the addition of several canals in the early 1800's. It was conveniently connected with the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Erie Canal and the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the Gulf of Mexico using the Mississippi River.
By the 1850's, as railroads continued to add mileage in Ohio, the canal's use and maintenance began to decline. Ownership of 3 miles of the canal was transferred to the city of Cleveland from the state in 1872. The canal at that point was drained and the prepared bed was leased to the Valley Railroad in 1879. Cleveland was an important transportation point for Minnesota iron ore and other raw materials being moved across the Great Lakes in the 1870's and 80's.
Toledo was founded along the west bank of the Maumee River in 1833. With the addition of canals, and later with its position along the railway between New York and Chicago, Toledo grew fast. Toledo was a major glassmaking town, producing windows, bottles and glass art, and boasting furniture manufacturers, carriage makers and breweries. When the railroads began to replace the canals as the preferred mode of transportation, Toledo became a prominent center for several railroad companies.
This map was published in 1887 by William S. Cappeller. It shows cities, towns, counties, waterways, and the Ohio railroad network of 1887, both single-track and double-track lines, with mileage noted between stations.
