Description

Railroad Map of Ohio published by the State, prepared under the direction of commissioner of railroads and telegraphs.

Transportation was important in Ohio with the addition of several canals by the 1830's and railroads beginning in the 1850's.

Coal mining was quite important for the economy of Ohio beginning in the early 1800's. The coal regions were mostly in the southern and eastern parts of the state. Coal began to be transported from the coal mines to Cleveland in 1828. There the coal was sold for use by the many steamship companies that traveled through the Great Lakes region. Coal was found to be a more efficient power source for the steamers rather than wood.

As railroad systems and industries emerging throughout that part of the country, the demand for coal increased drastically. Ohio coal mine production reached five million tons by the early 1870's. Demand doubled that output by 1890.

Towards the late 1800's, Youngstown was a major intersection for several railroads and was becoming a major manufacturing center for steel.

This map was published in 1898 by R.S. Kayler. It shows cities, towns, counties and waterways. Included is a list of 1898 railways and electric railways operating in Ohio.
