This map of Ohio was published in 1882 by W.L. Nicholson, topographer of the US Postal Service. It shows county boundaries, cities and towns, waterways, and the railroad network and post offices of 1882.
The Railway Mail Service was first used in 1864 as a convenient method of mail sorting and service. Mail sorters actually rode the trains, day after day, in specially designed cars to better serve counties, cities and post offices. The service covered most of the country by the 1870's. By the 1890's over 154,000 miles of railroad was served by the Railway Mail Service, which employed nearly 6,000 clerks.
