Description

View of Monongahela, Washington County, P.A., 1902 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This bird’s-eye view print of Monongahela, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1902. Monongahela was an early ferry town for users crossing the Monongahela River. Known then as Parkison’s Ferry, the town prospered with the river’s busy transportation. In 1836, the first bridge was built across the river prompting more growth in the area. The city that was incorporated in the 1830's as Williamsport adopted the name Monongahela City in 1837.

The map from 1902 shows the bridge across the Monongahela River toward Forward Township in Allegheny County. The four-framed truss bridge was built in 1884 replacing an earlier wooden bridge. The bridge was rebuilt in 1910 using a three-truss design.
