This bird’s-eye view print of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and vicinity from the 1870's shows the location of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. Philadelphia grew rapidly with its port location and by the 1870's it had become not only a busy trade center and port, but also was a major railroad hub. Philadelphia was served by several railroads that all converged here. The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad was chartered in 1833 and work was immediately begun on the valuable connection between Philadelphia and Peter’s Island where it met the Philadelphia and Columbia Railway that connected to Reading. The railway expanded and acquired other railways and by the time the Pennsylvania Coal Fields were discovered, it had a network of trains reaching all accessible sites. The P. & R. Railway maintained branches to Columbia, Harrisburg, Williamsport, Chester, and Philadelphia. In 1870 the company signed a lease giving them navigational rights of the Schuylkill Valley for 999 years.
