Description

View of Tarentum, Allegheny County, P.A., 1901 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler.

This aero-view print of Tarentum, Pennsylvania was drawn and published by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler in 1901. Tarentum was a mere saw and grist mill hamlet at the mouth of Bull Creek until 1828 when the Pennsylvania Canal was completed and filled. The community established at this point along the Allegheny River received much impetus with the new canal and its valuable locks.

The discovery of natural gas at Tarentum gained attention in the mid-1800's as manufacturers emerged throughout the valley, eager to use the newly defined fuel source including paper mills, brick works, salt works, iron and steel novelty works, and glassmakers.

The Tarentum Glass Co. was established in 1879 producing flint-glass bottles and jars. In 1884 Tarentum gained two pressed-glass makers; the Richards & Hartley Glass Company and the Challinor, Taylor & Co., Ltd. In 1886, the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company established a large works at Tarentum which employed 1,000 craftspeople at their twelve-acre building.

Tarentum was regularly served by the Pennsylvania Railroad.

The illustration from 1901 includes labeled streets, bridges and buildings.
