Description

View of Williamsburg, Blair County, P.A., 1906 / drawn & published by Fowler & Kelly.

This aero-view print of Williamsburg, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by Fowler & Kelly in 1906. Williamsburg was established in the 1790's along the Frankstown branch of the Juniata River. A grist and saw mill was erected near the river using power supplied by a big spring.

Williamsburg evolved around the mills and spring, but was then called Akestown after landowner Jacob Ake. Williamsburg was later adopted as the town’s name after Jacob’s son William Ake.

Williamsburg began to be served by the Pennsylvania canal system in 1832. Later, in the 1870's, the canal’s foundation was used by the Pennsylvania Railroad for a branch from Williamsburg to Hollidaysburg.

On December 29th of 1906 the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Alexander Johnston Cassatt, died suddenly of heart failure. His estimated wealth at the time was between 50 and 75 million dollars.

The map from 1906 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad line. It features inset illustrations of the following:

  • Residence of Samuel Sparr, Postmaster.
