Description

View of Chattanooga, Hamilton County, T.N., 1871 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.

This panoramic print of Chattanooga, Tennessee was drawn and published by Albert Ruger in 1871. In 1838, Chattanooga emerged from an internment camp for Indians awaiting transport along the Trail of Tears. Upon removal of the Indians, Chattanooga prospered with manufacturing interests and transportation, first by riverboat and then using railroads.

During the Civil War years, Chattanooga and vicinity experienced much fighting as the town was located at a critical battle point. Four years before this map was drawn, the community was nearly washed away, as the Tennessee River rose to a level of 58 feet.

The map published in 1871 includes labeled streets, buildings, railroad lines and riverboat activity.
