Description

Appleton, Outagamie County, Wisconsin 1867. Drawn from nature by A. Ruger.

Reproduction panoramic map of Appleton, Wisconsin, drawn from nature by Albert Ruger in 1867. Incorporated as a village in 1853, the first Appleton resident of record was John F. Johnston, who was also made village president. Appleton was named after Samuel Appleton of Boston, the father-in-law of philanthropist Amos A. Lawrence, whose $10,000 donation was matched by the Methodist Church and used to found the Lawrence Institute in 1847. The name was changed to Lawrence University in 1849, just before classes began. Lawrence University was the first co-educational university in Wisconsin, founded before Wisconsin became a state in 1848. Lawrence University is indexed on the map. Appleton was incorporated as a city in 1857 with Amos Storey as its first mayor.

The first paper mill in Appleton was built in 1853. The map indexes several mills, including paper, flour and woolen mills.

The map captures the town as it appeared just seven years before the birth of Harry Houdini, who claimed to have been born in Appleton on April 6, 1874, although other records exist that show he was born in March of 1874 in Budapest, Hungary.
