Description

Map of Alaska, Yukon Territory and British Columbia showing connections of the White Pass and Yukon route.

In 1867 William H. Seward’s deal with Russia gained possession of the Alaska Territory by the United States government for $7.2 million. A “provisional city government” was set up in Sitka and most American government and business dealings were conducted there in those early years.

Beginning in the 1890's gold fever lured thousands of fortune hunters to both the Alaska and Yukon Territories in search of that valuable ore. The famed Chilkoot Pass route became so popular and arduous in the late 1890's that Canadian officials barred anyone from entering Canada who wasn’t carrying enough supplies to last for one year.

In 1906 the capital was moved from Sitka to Juneau. Alaska was organized as a territory in 1912; earning statehood in 1959.

Alaska is the largest of the United States at roughly 586 thousand miles, or twice the size of Texas. It contains almost 34,000 miles of tidal coastline. Its Aleutian Island chain which extends west from the mainland remains a hotbed for numerous active volcanoes. Alaska is reported to contain more than three million lakes.

This map was published in 1904 by Marsh & Grant Company. Includes inset and table of distances from Skagway.
