Description

Map showing the Norfolk, Wilmington & Charleston Railroad.

This map of the eastern United States from Philadelphia to Charleston, SC was published in 1891 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It features portions of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. It shows counties, major cities and towns, waterways, and the railroad network of the 1890's.

All railroads are labeled and the proposed Norfolk, Wilmington & Charleston Railroad is displayed using red, along with its projected depots and stations. Unfortunately the line was never built but was planned only. It was pictured as a streamlined conveyance between Charleston, South Carolina and Wilmington, Delaware with a proposed branch to Columbia, South Carolina. All stations had been designated and most are labeled on this map.

It was suggested that the valuable natural resources of South Carolina be more directly connected with the manufacturing facilities of the Delaware River region. Wilmington, Delaware was a manufacturing giant during this time. Railroad cars were built and outfitted in Wilmington, and iron ships were constructed on a large scale in its shipyards.
