Description

View of Ionia, Ionia County, M.I., 1868 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.

This bird’s-eye view print of Ionia, Michigan was drawn and published by Albert Ruger, Chicago Lith. Co. in 1868. Ionia was settled in the 1830's along the banks of Grand River. Ionia maintained, in the 1800's, as the agricultural business center for farmers of the region. It was named county seat in 1831, when Ionia County was organized.

A land office established in 1836, at Ionia, brought many newcomers to the area. There were two flouring mills and a foundry in town. A rope ferry across the river, at this point, was replaced by a wooden bridge in 1847.

The Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee Railway crossed the Detroit, Northern & Lansing line at this location. Many of the town’s early structures and foundations were constructed using handsome variegated sandstone discovered nearby during the building of the railroad. Ionia also held important railroad shops and yards. In 1865 Ionia was incorporated.

The image includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route. A lower inset illustration depicts the Union School.
