Description

View of Pittsfield, Merrimack County, N.H., 1884 / drawn & published by Geo. E. Norris.

This panoramic print of Pittsfield, New Hampshire was drawn and published by George E. Norris, Beck & Pauli Lith. in 1884. Pittsfield was settled in the 1700's along the Suncook River. A small dam was created at that location that powered the early mills of the region. In the 1820's a cotton factory was established, churches emerged, a public library was established and the Pittsfield Academy was organized.

As the village progressed, it became apparent that better transportation was needed, leading to the creation of the Suncook Railway. The railroad finally began operations in 1869, enabling products of the area to be transported more easily. It also lured other manufacturers to the region.

In the 1880's, Pittsfield maintained a number of boot and shoe manufactories. In 1881, an empty shoe manufactory was acquired by E. A. Libby who retrofitted the building to create superior ladies’ goods. The Morgan, Dore & Libby firm dissolved in 1884, but continued production under the supervision of Libby.

The map includes labeled roads, buildings, bridges, waterways and railroad route.
