Description

Map exhibiting the fixed location of the main trunk of the New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western Railroad of Louisiana.

This somewhat deteriorated outline map showing Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Eastern Texas was published in 1859 by G. Bayley of the Great Western Railroad Company. It displays the railroad’s destinations in the south-central United States. Indicated are completed, located, and proposed railroads. It also details steamboat routes from Berwick Bay to ports in the Gulf of Mexico. A table of distances appears at the left side of the map.

The New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western Railroad was a broad-gauge (5ft 6in) railroad that was built from New Orleans to Berwick Bay in the 1850's. Its rails were converted to standard gauge in 1872. In 1869 the New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western Railroad was purchased by Charles Morgan who operated a number of Gulf of Mexico steamboat lines. It then operated as Morgan’s Louisiana & Texas Railroad and Steamship Company until becoming a valued portion of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s main line.
