Description

Map showing the Houston and Texas Central Railroad and its connections.

The city of Houston was founded in 1836 near the banks of the Buffalo Bayou. It was named after politician and soldier Samuel Houston.

The development of Houston's port and railroad system and the discovery of oil reserves in 1901 have led the city to its current status as the largest within Texas and the fourth largest in the country.

Houston is now home to NASAs Mission Control Center and the Texas Medical Research Center.

The United States officially welcomed Texas as its 26th state in 1845.

Benito Juarez became president of Mexico once again in 1867. In that same year the Medicine Lodge Treaty began the relocation of Native Americans of the southern Plains tribes to reservations in western Oklahoma.

This relief map of Texas and the southwestern United States was published in 1867 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It shows cities, towns, waterways, and railroad lines.
