WATERTOWN, SOUTH DAKOTA - 1883 - Bird's Eye View Map

References include:

Fine reproduction of a panoramic map of Watertown, South Dakota in 1883.  County Seat of Condington County, the town of Watertown was formed when the new railroad line stopped short of the region's original settlement of Kampeska, and was moved to meet the railroad.  The arrival of the railroad brought a population boom to the area.  The federal land office moved from Springfield to Watertown in 1875 to handle the influx of settlers to the region.  In 1880, the population of Codington County was listed at 2,156, by 1884 there were 5,648 people in the county.  This map depicts the town as it appeared shortly after its formation.  Inset illustrations include the buildings along the west side of Maple Street, the west side of Oak Street, and Lake Kampeska.  Library of Congress stamp on lower margin is dated July 28, 1883.
