Historic Map of Alaska - 1897
Millroy's map of Alaska and the Klondyke gold fields.

Historic Map of Alaska - 1897

                                           The Climate and Diseases.

The climate is wet.  The rainfall heavy.  Although there is almost a continuous sun in summertime, evaporation is very slow, owing to the thick moss, which will not conduct heat.  In consequence the ground is always swampy.  The heavy mist rising from the river settles down in the valley.  This dampness makes one feel the cold much more.

In the Klondyke region in mid-winter the sun rises from 9:30 to 10 a.m., and sets from 1 to 2 p.m.  The total length of daylight being about four hours, the temperature from October to April varies from 8 to 60 degrees below zero, while during the summer months the sun rises at 3 a.m. and sets at 10 p.m., and the heat is almost intolerable and mosquitoes are extremely annoying.

Men should be sober, strong and healthy, and of a cheerful and hopeful disposition, and willing workers, and should be able to adapt themselves quickly to their surroundings.  Special care should be taken to see that their lungs are sound, and they they are free from rheumatism.

The diseases met with in this country are dyspepsia, anaemia, scurvy, caused by improper food, sameness of diet, overwork, want of fresh vegetables, overheated and badly ventilated houses, rheumatism, pneumonia, bronchitis, enteritis, cystitis, and other acute diseases from exposure to wet and cold.

                                               Revenues and Traffic.

Revenue Collectors are located at Chilcat, Dyea, and Ft Cudahy.  Custom charges on Miners' outfits from the United States are those authorized by the ordinary revenue laws of Canada.  It has been reported that and exorbitant duty of 15 cents a pound would be imposed on outfits and supplies, on the contrary the following are expempt: Miner's blankets, personal clothing in use, cooking utensils in use, and one hundred pounds of food for the journey, charging ordinary custom duty on excess.  It is necessary to hire Indians to carry supplies and outfits over either the Chilcoot or Chilkat Pass; arriving at Lake Linderman you build a boat sufficiently large to carry your party and provisions down to the Yukon River.

At Dawson or Circle City provisions are scarce and expensive.  By spring new boat lines will be plying the Yukon Rover, which means lower prices on necessities.
