Description

View of Newtown, Bucks County, P.A., 1893 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler.

This panoramic print of Newtown, Pennsylvania was drawn and published by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler in 1893. Newtown was one of several towns founded by William Penn to provide country homes for city denizens while maintaining the agricultural interests of the area. Newtown prospered as an agricultural community with a passion for growing flowers, fruit of all kinds and ornamental trees. In 1883, Henry Mitchell established a brownstone quarry just outside of Newtown. At it peak, the quarry was producing two thousand tons of stone per year and was a large employer of the towns citizens.
