Description

Perspective map of the city of Gadsden, Ala. county seat of Etowah County 1887. [Drawn by] H. Wellge. Beck & Pauli Lith. Co.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Gadsden, Alabama drawn and published by Henry H. Wellge & Co. in 1887. Gadsden, county seat for Etowah County, began as a stagecoach stop between Huntsville and Rome along the Coosa River and was referred to as "Double Springs". In 1845, when Captain James Lafferty steered his steamboat, the "Coosa", to the area, the citizens of Double Springs wanted to honor him by naming their town "Lafferty's Landing", but upon his refusal they chose Gadsden instead, in honor of Colonel James Gadsden of South Carolina. Gadsden would become an important transportation center due to riverboat shipping.
