Description

View of Hot Springs, Garland County, A.R., 1890 / drawn & published by Woodward & Tiernam Printing Co.

This water-stained panoramic print of Hot Springs, Arkansas was drawn and published by Woodward & Tiernam Printing Co. for H. C. Townsend, general passenger and ticket agent, Iron Mountain Route in 1890. Set aside when Arkansas was still a territory, as a federal reserve, Hot Springs maintains a bevy of natural hot mineral springs and underground rivers. These waters flow into a natural creek wonderland.

The town of Hot Springs was made the county seat of Garland County when the county was formed in 1873. A narrow gauge railroad from Malvern was added in 1875. Rumors of claim jumping prompted the federal government, in the late 1870's, to take over ownership of Hot Springs. A federal commission was then brought in to survey property, lay out the town and deal with the legality of claims.

“Bathhouse Row” began taking shape as several large hotels and spa resorts emerged at Hot Springs. These luxury resorts lured vacationers and ailment remedy seekers from all parts.

The water-stained image includes Bathhouse Row with streetcar, carriage and pedestrian activity, and vicinity. It features border banner facts stating the following:

• Hotel Accommodations 12,000. Daily Bathing Facilities 6,260. Daily Flow of Hot Water 500,000 Gal.
• 10 Churches, Free Library, Opera House. Gymnasium, Parks, Fine Livery Drives, etc. Three other mineral springs resorts within 6 miles.
