Description

View of Cripple Creek, Teller County, C.O., 1896 / drawn & published by Phillips & Desjardins.

This colorful bird’s-eye view print of Cripple Creek, Colorado was drawn by Phillips & Desjardins and published by Western Lith. Co. in 1896. In 1891, a major gold strike was discovered at Cripple Creek, near Victor, by Winfield Scott Stratton of Colorado Springs. His discovery was referred to as the Independence Lode, and by 1896, tiny Cripple Creek, at an elevation of nearly 9,500 feet above sea level, was bursting with the activities of speculators and miners.

Many millions of dollars worth of gold were extracted during this era and many mining labor disputes ensued. Cripple Creek booster in lower left states:

”There are seven towns in the district within a radius of three miles, with populations from 600 to 20,000 inhabitants; the City of Cripple Creek being the largest. This city was founded in 1891; the location is 10 miles south-west of Pike’s Peak. Altitude 9500 feet; has efficient water system, sanitary sewers, electric light, telephone services and a paid Fire Department. The entire center of the city was destroyed by two fires; the first April 25th and the second, April 29th, 1896 27 blocks burnt, mostly rebuilt with brick and stone buildings in the same year, including a hotel costing $150,000, a City Hall building, etc. There are numerous churches, and fine school accommodation, three banks and a mining stock exchange. Two railroads have their termini in the city. There are over 200 shipping mines in the district, of these 20 are shown in the margin. The picture also shows the hills surrounding the city and Pike’s Peak in the distance. Population of the city 19,000.

Town of Victor, situated 3.5 miles south of Cripple Creek is possessed of all modern conveniences; water, electric light, telephone service, paid fire department, etc. Also two of the richest gold mines in the world within its limits. Population, 9,000.”
