This bird’s-eye view print of Denver, Colorado was drawn and published by J. H. Flett in 1881. Denver was established at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River during the gold rush era of the late 1850's.
When the Colorado Territory was formed in 1861, Denver was named the county seat of Arapahoe County. The town, located in the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains was a haven for gold and silver seekers of the era.
Trains from all parts branched out to the region’s mining interests from Denver. Denver was a recognized supply town for the mines as well as a transportation center for the various ore.
Telephone service was installed in Denver in 1879. The new Tabor Block building was the talk of the town. The five-story ornate structure was built by Mr. Tabor, who had made his fortune at nearby Leadville.
Along with the wealth of the valuable mines, Denver was attracting characters like the infamous confidence man Soapy Smith. Con artists and flim-flam men were busy taking advantage of the great number of strangers in town who carried money to spare. Saloons and gambling halls were common sights in Denver during the 1880s.
