This bird’s-eye view print of Golden, Colorado was drawn by J. J. Stoner and published by Beck & Pauli, Lithographers Co. in 1882. Golden began as an outpost west of Denver used as supply center for miners during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush era.

The town located along Clear Creek became an early political center of Colorado when it was named the territorial capital in 1862. Industries began to appear such as the ore smelting and grain processing.

A brewery was established at Golden in 1873 by Adolph Coors and Jacob Schueler. In 1880, with the business’ success Mr. Coors was able to buy out Mr. Schueler leaving Coors as sole owner.

Also in 1873 the Colorado School of Mines was founded at Golden. The institution was originally operated by the Episcopal Church, and later was run by the state. The important research school remains a valuable learning institution of all aspects of mining to this day.
