Description

View of Trinidad, Las Animas County, C.O., 1882 / drawn & published by J. J. Stoner.

This panoramic print of Trinidad, Colorado was drawn by J. J. Stoner and published by Beck & Pauli, Lithographers Co. in 1882. Trinidad is situated at the base of Raton Peak at an altitude of 6, 025 feet above sea level and is at the gateway to Costilla Pass. Trinidad became Las Animas’ county seat of government when the county was formed in 1866.

The region surrounding Trinidad was found to be rich in coal and other metals. Several smelting furnaces operated at Trinidad during the coal era that supplied fuel to Denver and other points. It was determined that the coal discovered here was the only coal in the region that would coke successfully. Iron, copper, silica, and fire and potter’s clay were also mined at Trinidad.

Valued quarries at Trinidad were producing large amounts of building stones for shipment all over the state during the 1880's. Timber was harvested on a large scale throughout the vicinity and the raising of cattle was important in the area, as several “Cattle Kings” resided there.

Trinidad was considered the last major commercial center for travelers until reaching the Pacific Coast. In 1882, Trinidad was served by the Union Pacific, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe and Denver & Rio Grande Railways. Gunman Bat Masterson was a town marshal in the mid-1880's.

The map published in 1882 indicates Trinidad’s population to be 3,500. Included are labeled streets, buildings and railroad route. Peaks are noted in the distance. Featured are inset illustrations of the First National Bank. Main St. and North Side.
