A historic map of Jewett City, CT in 1889, delicately colored, with a charming view of the hills beyond. The central business district of the Connecticut town of Griswold, Jewett City was named in honor of Eliezer Jewett, who began a settlement there in 1771. The settlement grew to include a saw mill and grist mill. The first irrigation plant in the area was also built by Eliezer Jewett, along with a clothiers shop and tavern. Main Street was laid out in 1768 with a bridge being built across the Quinebaug River.

The manufacture of cotton began in Jewett City in 1809. The original Jewett City Cotton Manufacturing Company Mills was enlarged and a new mill was built at the mouth of the Pachaug River. The Jewett City Cotton Manufacturing Company Mills and office are referenced on the map as W. A. Slater's Jewett City Cotton Mills. John and Samuel Slater purchased the mill in 1823.
