Description

View of South Manchester, Conn. 1880.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of the community known as South Manchester, Connecticut, published by O. H. Bailey & Co. in 1880. South Manchester was a farming community until industry in the 1800's brought several mills and factories to the area, powered by the many fast-running rivers and brooks. In 1838 the Cheney family founded their famous silk factory there. Many paper mills emerged as well, like the Rogers Co., Case Bros. at Highland Park, Adams Paper Mill in Buckland, Lydall & Foulds at Parker Village and Oakland Paper Co. near South Windsor. New stores in town at the time included J. W. Hale Co. and C. E. House & Son, Inc, which later merged to become House and Hale. Manchester is nicknamed "Silk City".

This map has been edited to repair significant damage. The map features clearly labeled street names with lively scenes of railroad, pedestrian and carriage traffic. Included are inset illustrations of Cheney Hall and W. H. Cheney's Store.
