Description

Torrington, Conn. : 1889 / drawn & published by Geo. E. Norris, Brocton, Mass., 1889

Reproduction bird's-eye view of the community known as Torrington, CT, drawn and published by Geo. E. Norris in 1889. Formerly known as Wolcottville, Torrington was settled in the 1700's along the Naugatuck River Valley as a farming community. The 19th century brought several manufacturing companies to the area including its famed brass mills. The fast-moving Naugatuck River aided factories that used it for their waterpower. The Naugatuck Valley Railroad connected the area in 1849. Industry boomed and the area population exploded with the arrival of thousands of immigrants ready to work in the plants. Soon Torrington became an important producer of a variety of metal products such as bicycles, needles and brass hardware.

While there is obvious discoloration due to water damage, the map features clearly labeled street names with lively scenes of railroad, carriage and pedestrian traffic.
