Description

View of Windsor Locks, Conn., 1877 / O. H. Bailey & Co. Publishers ; lith. & print by J. Knauber & Co., Milwaukee, Wis.

Reproduction map of the community known as Windsor Locks, CT, published by O. H. Bailey. Located in Hartford County along the Connecticut River, Windsor Locks was named for a group of locks that form part of the Enfield Falls Canal which is used to bypass shallow portions of the river. The canal opened in 1829 to much fanfare. The town known for years as "Pinemeadow" was incorporated in 1854 as Windsor Locks. Over the years several manufacturers built their industries in the area including the famed C. H. Dexter & Sons paper-works, E. Horton & Son Company manufacturing their lathe-chucks and many textile mills. In 1871 the J. R. Montgomery & Co. opened their factory in the Connecticut River Company building making cotton warps.

The beautifully colored map features clearly labeled street names with lively scenes of railroad, carriage, river and pedestrian traffic.
